Dental CPD FAQs

Still unsure which course to start with? Tell us about your role and we'll recommend a path.

Ask our team
Is this CPD verifiable for the GDC?

Yes. Every module has documented aims and objectives, anticipated learning outcomes, a quality-assurance process and a certificate stating the hours and GDC development outcomes — the four elements the GDC requires for verifiable CPD. You log the hours in your own eGDC record.

How many hours do I need?

Dentists need 100 verifiable hours per five-year cycle; hygienists, therapists, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists 75; dental nurses and technicians 50. Everyone must complete at least 10 hours in any two-year period and make an annual statement.

Which topics does the GDC recommend?

Highly recommended: medical emergencies (10 hours per cycle, refreshed every year), disinfection and decontamination (5 hours) and radiography and radiation protection (5 hours). Recommended: safeguarding, complaints handling, legal and ethical issues and oral cancer early detection.

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Every track starts with a free taster and a foundation course written for people in their first weeks in the role. Advanced courses assume you have completed the foundation level or have equivalent experience.

How long do I have to complete a course?

There is no deadline — access is for life. Most learners finish a foundation course in two to three weeks studying an hour or two a week, and a CPD module in a single sitting.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Every course issues a downloadable certificate listing the aims, learning outcomes, GDC development outcomes and verifiable CPD hours. Practices use them for CQC training evidence and appraisals.
